Sapphire – The Gemstone of the Heavens

Sapphire belongs to the corundum group and, after diamond, is one of the hardest gemstones in the world (Mohs 9). Its intense blue color is caused by traces of titanium and iron – but sapphires come in almost all colors of the spectrum.

Symbolism & Meaning

For millennia, the sapphire has been regarded as a stone of wisdom, fidelity, and divine favor – revered by kings and clergy alike.

Wisdom & Clarity: Sapphires represent mental focus, truth, and inner peace. They are said to sharpen the mind and aid in decision-making.

Fidelity & Loyalty: As an engagement stone, the sapphire symbolizes eternal fidelity – famously known from Princess Diana’s (now Kate Middleton’s) engagement ring.

Protection: In many cultures, the sapphire was considered a protective stone against envy, betrayal, and negative energies.

Spirituality: In the Middle Ages, clergy wore sapphires as a symbol of connection to heaven and divine truth.

Birthstone: The sapphire is the traditional birthstone for the month of September.

Zodiac Sign: Particularly associated with Virgo and Libra.

Basic Characteristics

Sapphire belongs to the corundum family and is one of the hardest and most coveted gemstones in the world.

  • Mineral Class: Corundum (aluminum oxide, Al₂O₃)
  • Crystal System: Trigonal
  • Hardness: 9 on the Mohs scale (only diamond is harder)
  • Density: 3.95–4.03 g/cm³
  • Refractive Index: 1.762–1.770
  • Luster: Adamantine to vitreous
  • Transparency: Transparent to opaque
  • Cleavage: None (very tough material, ideal for jewelry)
  • Pleochroism: Distinct (shows different hues depending on the viewing angle)

Colors:

  • Cornflower Blue (the classic blue)
  • Royal Blue (deep, rich blue)
  • Padparadscha (pink-orange, very rare)
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Green
  • Violet / Purple
  • Pink
  • Colorless (also "Leuco Sapphire")
  • Black
  • White
  • Teal (blue-green)
  • Color-Change (changes color depending on the light source)

Cut & Shape

Sapphires are available in many classic and modern cuts and shapes:

  • Cut: Oval, Round (Brilliant), Cushion, Emerald (Rectangle/Step), Pear, Marquise, Heart, Trillion, Cabochon (domed, uncut), Princess, Radiant, Asscher, Baguette

Inclusions & Characteristics

Sapphires are natural gemstones – inclusions are a sign of authenticity, not a flaw. Only under a microscope does the true nature of the stone reveal itself.

Typical Inclusions:

  • Rutile needles (fine silky structure, create the coveted asterism/star effect in cabochons)
  • Fingerprint inclusions (healing fractures)
  • Crystal inclusions (mineral crystals inside)
  • Feather inclusions (partial fractures)
  • Zoning (color bands or zones)

Quality Grades: Eye-clean (no visible inclusions to the naked eye) is considered premium quality. Minor inclusions are normal in natural gemstones and only slightly reduce their value. Strong inclusions can impair transparency and brilliance.

Special Feature: Kashmiri sapphires often exhibit a characteristic "silky-velvety" texture due to fine rutile needles – a quality characteristic, not a defect.

Treatment & Authenticity

Natural sapphires are often treated to improve their color and clarity. Transparency in declaration is a matter of course for us.

Thermal Treatment (Heating): The most widespread method – stones are heated at high temperatures to intensify color and reduce inclusions. Accepted industry-wide and only devalues very high-quality stones.

Beryllium Diffusion: Color change by diffusing beryllium – must be declared, as it devalues the stone.

Glass/Resin Filling: For heavily fractured stones – significantly devalues the stone, not in our assortment.

Untreated (No Heat): Rare and particularly valuable – certified by independent laboratories (GRS, Gübelin, SSEF).

Proof of Authenticity: All our sapphires are natural stones. Upon request, we provide certificates from renowned laboratories (GIC, GRS, Gübelin, SSEF). We do not carry synthetic or simulated stones.

Sapphires at Phönix Gemstone

We source sapphires directly from their countries of origin – for jewelers, goldsmiths, and collectors who value quality and transparency. Each stone is carefully examined and documented.
